SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

All ALA agents use Query Manager. Please note that any submissions sent via email, unless requested or sent on referral, will not be considered.

We encourage all authors and artists to prepare and polish their work prior to submission. We only accept human-created work and do not consider AI-generated work.

Here are a few helpful tips to consider when submitting:

  1. Select one agent to submit your work to. Please review our agents’ bios and manuscript wishlists to find the best fit. We ask that you submit to one agent at a time. However, if one agent passes, you are welcome to submit up to three agents at ALA.

  2. Prepare a polished query letter with a detailed description of the work you are submitting.

  3. Create a bio with or without credentials. We love to work with debut creators and encourage you to list out any and all accomplishments, interests, goals, and quirks within your bio.

  4. Make sure the work you are submitting is complete. If we request a full manuscript, we would love to see it right away!

    • Please note that this does not apply to graphic novels or nonfiction projects. These require completed proposals, but not full manuscripts or illustrations.

  5. When submitting your manuscript, please follow these guidelines:

    • Novels: Submit 10-20 polished pages.

    • Picture Book Text: Submit the entire manuscript.

    • Picture Book Text + Art: Submit the entire manuscript with 1-2 art samples (online portfolio or link)

    • Graphic Novels: Submit a proposal with 10-20 sample pages, 2-4 full colored pages, a summary or synopsis, and a sample script of 10-20 pages.

    • Illustrator ONLY: Please note in your submission that it is for Art Representation Only and include a link to your online portfolio.

    • Nonfiction: Submit a proposal with 2-3 sample chapters, a complete outline, bio, and a brief market analysis.

  6. If you met one of our agents at an in-person or online event and were invited to submit to them, please mention the event in the query.

RESPONSE TIME

Each agent does their best to respond in a timely manner. We aim to respond within an 8-12 week window. At the 12 week mark, please feel free to follow up with the agent. If 12 weeks pass and you receive no response, you can submit to another ALA agent.

If you receive an offer of representation from another agency, please send us a note in QueryManager to notify us of the offer and deadline to get back to you. We kindly ask that you give us the industry standard time of 2 weeks to review your work and determine whether we will make an offer or pass.

While we would love to provide individual feedback on each query we receive, it is unfortunately not possible for us at this time. Please note that we do review and respond to ALL queries.

WHAT IF I MADE AN ERROR IN MY QUERY?

Don’t worry, we’re all human! Typos happen. Sometimes we press submit too early. Maybe you sent it to the wrong agent or doubled up and sent it to too many people. Either way, try not to sweat it.

If you did send your project to multiple ALA agents, please send them a note in QueryManager and we’ll sort it out internally. Similarly, if you accidentally submitted it too early, you can always send us a message or withdraw the query and resubmit.

WHAT IF WE PASS ON YOUR QUERY?

We are so honored you chose to share your work with us. If we passed on your project, it is most likely due to reasons outside of your control. We may already represent a similar project or are being extra selective due to the changing trends in the market.

We put 110% into every client and project we take on. We are selective because we provide the utmost passion and support needed to help our clients achieve their dreams.

Publishing runs on passion but remains a business. This business involves rejection at nearly every stage, and we understand the pain and frustration that comes with it. Us choosing to pass on your project is not a reflection of your work or talent; it simply comes down to whether the project is a good fit for our individual interests and growing lists.

We hope you understand and encourage you to keep going! A rejection simply means you’re doing the work of a writer. Remember, all it takes is a single “yes!” to take that next big step in your publishing journey.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Azantian, Alexandra Weiss, Masha Gunic, T.S. Ferguson, Keir Alekseii, Shannon Lechon, Claire Draper, Thais Afonso, Mark O'Brien
