Sam Benc
Samantha Benc is a queer comic maker and illustrator living in Philadelphia. She grows plants in her apartment, raises shrimp in a tank and loves physical things. Her focus and passion is on making comics, something she's been doing since she was very young and all through college where she did hand stapled zines and small runs of comics. She's working on her debut long form graphic novel right now while she continues to explore smaller projects and opportunities. Recently in her work she's been pursing themes related to our environment and relationship to it, as well as the commodification of that connection. Comics can be a space to explore some of the darker fears and anxieties of our world, and she tries and ground her work in realism while balancing cynicism with needed aspects of hopefulness and joy. She loves science fiction and surrealism especially and loves to both read and make work that examines personification and consciousness. She graduated from Art Institute of Boston in 2013 with a degree in Sequential Art and Illustration.
